Advocacy Alert: Call to Action from ISASS Coding and Reimbursement Task Force Chair Morgan Lorio, MD

Dear ISASS Members: It has been brought to my attention that YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION IS REQUIRED regarding a time sensitive notice issued by the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Summarized, AHRQ has requested comments on spinal fusion for painful lumbar degenerative disc or joint diseases. It is our timely duty, and it is imperative that we respond with a strong front supporting the care of our spinal patients. As spinal surgeons, we must be actively involved in this worthy endeavor. ISASS Coding & Reimbursement Task Force

The ISASS Board is pleased to announce that Morgan P. Lorio, MD, FACS, of Bristol, Tennessee, will chair the new Coding & Reimbursement Task Force. Dr. Lorio is in private practice, and also is an assistant clinical professor at East Tennessee State University. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Dr. Lorio completed his general surgical internship and orthopedic residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and completed the Simmons Spine Fellowship and a clinical practice fellowship with Dr. Hanson Yuan at the Health Science Center in Syracuse, NY. The SAS Journal Changes Name to The International Journal of Spine Surgery

Scientific Journal of ISASS also changes its publication schedule for 2012 November 10, 2011 – The SAS Journal, the official scientific journal of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS) and the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, has announced editorial changes that will better reflect the publication’s broader scope of content as well as improve the way content is delivered to its audience. ISASS Seeks Members’ Participation on New Coding & Reimbursement Task Force

In order to advocate properly for spine surgeons, ISASS seeks members who have an interest in coding, valuation and reimbursement issues, and who might lend their expertise to our nascent efforts through participation in a newly formed Coding & Reimbursement Task Force. As you may know, ISASS is halfway through the 3-year process of gaining admittance to the AMA House of Delegates, which affords us official participation in the AMA/CPT process as well as the Relative Values Update Committee (the “RUC”). Spine patients and their surgeons are experiencing an unprecedented wave of surgery denials and reduced reimbursements, and it is imperative that the spine surgery community has adequate representation at the table when coding and valuation decisions are made.
