A Message from the ISASS Board of Directors and Past Presidents

The current environment for spine surgeons and their patients is challenging. Downward pressure from payers on coverage and reimbursement for spinal surgeries is making it harder for patients to receive medically indicated surgical care and more difficult for surgeons to be fairly compensated for their skills and expertise. Even some of the procedures once considered the ‘standard of care’ are now being questioned. We hear these stories every day from our members, and many of them wonder, who is representing us and our patients? Who is fighting to ensure that patients have access to the spine care they need? Who is advocating for patient access to newer, better technologies? Introduction of SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act of 2014

ISASS staff participated in a conference call conducted by the American Medical Association (AMA) in which the SRG Repeal Legislation was discussed. We felt ISASS members would want to review the information presented. Staff for the chairmen and ranking minority members of the three Congressional committees of jurisdiction briefed physician groups this afternoon on the results of their bicameral, bipartisan negotiations on repealing the SGR. The “SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act of 2014,” which was introduced by Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-TX) in the House as H.R. 4015, addresses only the policy provisions related to eliminating the flawed payment update formula. The Next Steps for The International Journal of Spine Surgery

On January 1, the International Journal of Spine Surgery will begin its re-launch. There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the broad strokes – free access to all the Journal’s material will mean it’s easier for you as a researcher to get to it, even if you’re away from your institution.
