About Professor Kandiah Satkunanatham

ISASS17 Guest Speaker Professor Kandiah Satkunanatham

Regulating Medical Devices in Asia

How do you know that the implant you are using is going to work, or that it will not cause your patient harm, and you a hefty lawsuit? Have you ever thought of the elaborate screening that is carried out before a medical device is allowed to even reach the hospital?

Globalization has had a life of its own, as regards medical devices, from manufacturing, to sales, training and education of surgeons, and now medical tourism. Two decades ago a group of four countries and the EU got together to bring about convergence of their regulatory practices for medical devices. Fortunately, they also thought to make their documents available globally, to the benefit of many countries, including some in Asia.

Professor K Satku is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Singapore, a small country known for having one of the best healthcare systems in the world. He was previously Director of Medical Services of Singapore (similar to the U.S. Surgeon General) and currently chairs the country’s Health Sciences Authority, which is a parallel organization of the US FDA in Singapore.

He is convinced that globalization has made medicine safer, not only for less developed countries, but, with medical tourism reaching unprecedented proportions, people from the UK, EU and US.

Prof Satku will discuss how Asian countries are adapting to establish regulatory schemes that will ensure safety and performance of medical devices, as well as the responsibilities of all parties involved – from the manufacturer and the vendor, to the physician, the public, and the State.
