Abstract

The purpose of this study is the prospective surveillance and evaluation of peri- and postoperative outcomes after lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) with a novel, compressible-core prosthesis (M 6 L, Spinal Kinetics) offering 6 degrees of freedom. 53 patients with degenerative disc disease of at least one level of the lumbar spine were implanted with one or two artificial discs at the levels L 3/4, 4/5, or 5/S1 by one of the two authors between 2009 and 2011. Pre- and postoperative clinical characteristics including VAS and ODI, X-rays, and perioperative complications will be presented. 2-year results were available in 23 patients. Indications for lumbar TDR will be discussed.

In conclusion, in lumbar TDR with the M 6 L in selected patients a favorable short- to midterm clinical and radiographic outcome can be expected with no device related complications.
